Let’s Talk Tummy Time: Why It Matters and How to Actually Do It

If the words “tummy time” make your baby (or you) cringe a little—you’re not alone.

Those early weeks and months are full of firsts, and tummy time is one of the big ones. It sounds so simple… until your baby lets out a dramatic scream 15 seconds in.

So let’s break it down gently, and I’ll share what helped us along the way—meltdowns, milestones, and all.

What Is Tummy Time, Really?

Tummy time is just placing your baby on their stomach while they’re awake and supervised. It helps them:

  • Build neck, back, and shoulder muscles

  • Prevent flat spots on the head

  • Practice the foundational movements for rolling, crawling, and eventually sitting up

Think of it like baby’s version of Pilates.

When Should You Start?

As soon as you’re home from the hospital.

Yep, you can start with just a minute or two a couple of times a day—even if your baby mostly lies there and grunts.

“Tummy time” doesn’t have to look like a workout montage. It’s just giving baby a new perspective—with a little challenge.

Tips That Helped Us Survive (and Eventually Enjoy) Tummy Time:

1. Use a Boppy or Rolled Towel

Prop baby’s chest up with a soft surface to help reduce frustration and make it easier to lift their head.

2. Make It a Vibe

Play soft music. Lie on the floor with them. Talk, sing, or shake a rattle nearby. You are the entertainment.

3. Mirror, Mirror

Place a baby-safe mirror nearby so they can admire their adorable little face. It’s a game-changer!

4. Tummy-to-Tummy Counts

Laying baby on your chest while you recline is tummy time. Don’t let perfectionism steal your progress.

5. Start Small, Build Up

Even 1–2 minutes at a time makes a difference. Gradually aim for 15–30 minutes total per day.

Real Talk: It’s Okay If They Hate It at First

Some babies genuinely don’t enjoy tummy time for a while. That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. Think of it like a new skill—repetition, encouragement, and lots of grace help it stick.

Your baby’s comfort with tummy time might change week to week depending on:

  • Growth spurts

  • Gas or tummy issues

  • Sleep cycles

  • Teething

  • And let’s be honest: mood

Encouragement for You, Mama:

If you’re worried that your baby isn’t “doing enough,” take a breath.

Your presence, love, and effort already mean so much.

Tummy time is not a race—just another one of those small moments that helps baby grow stronger day by day. And no, you don’t need fancy gear. Just you, a floor, and some patience.

Save This for Later:

Tummy Time Quick-Start Guide:

  • Start Day 1 (as soon as you’re home)

  • Aim for 1–2 minutes, a few times per day

  • Gradually work up to 15–30 mins total/day

  • Tummy-to-tummy counts!

  • Crying = communication, not failure
